The New
Haven & Derby Rail Road Company. Stock issued September 29, 1886
at New York City. Incorporated in 1864 in the State of Connecticut.
Certificate
No. 573
was issued to Rowland D. Armstrong of Brooklyn,
New York for 10 shares of capital stock ($100 per share). Hand signed
by company
president Oral A. Sperry
and
secretary F. E. Harrison
.
Certificate is about 5.5” x 10.” Black print on cream-colored
paper. Small vignettes with train (top) and state seal of Connecticut
(bottom).
The New
Haven & Derby Railroad was chartered in 1864 in Connecticut to
build a line running from New Haven west to Derby (through Orange and
Tyler City), and north to Ansonia, planned as part of the route over
the never-built Hudson Highland Suspension Bridge. The line opened in
1871, and in 1888 a four-mile extension from Derby Junction to a
point in Shelton was opened. The rest of the extension, 10 miles from
that point to the Housatonic Railroad at Botsford, was built by the
Housatonic Railroad. The New Haven & Derby was leased to the
Housatonic in 1889.
