  • 1923 Biltmore Estate Company Stock Certificate Re-Issued During WWII No. 19
For your consideration, fresh to the market, is this unique and rare offering of a Biltmore Estate Company Stock Certificate originally purchased in 1923 that was later canceled and then Re-Issued during World War II.  This very rare certificate is originally for the purchase of 5 stocks by Burnham S. Colburn on September 30th 1923. In interesting turn of events this Stock Certificate was canceled and re-issued on April 15th 1942 during World War II.
The Biltmore Estate Company was formed and one of their ventures was the
    development
of a residential town close to The Biltmore House, which would become Biltmore Forest. This town, the land, and other business ventures have kept the The Biltmore Estate Company operational to this day. George and Edith Vanderbilt were incredible environmentalist, and sold the land to the government in which Pisgah National Forest resides today.
Burnham S. Colburn moved to outside Asheville, Biltmore Forest, in the 1920’s. He would serve as the Vice President and Treasurer of the Biltmore Estate Company until 1936. Colburn was an accomplished mineralogists, and also a collector of Cherokee artifacts. His collection was purchased by another person but is still in its entirety and on display through an agreement with the Cherokee Tribe.
From what I understand, shortly after Colburn moved to the Asheville area, the company wanted to develop a residential town around the Biltmore house, so a book of Common and Preferred Certifcated were printed, and the stock was sold at $100.00 per share. Most of the stocks were purchased by people close to the company, like Colburn himself, and the Vanderbilt family. The profit from this was used to hire the best architects and surveyors, construct the municipal buildings, country club, and golf course of the town that would become Biltmore Forest. Biltmore Forest is situated between the Biltmore House and Asheville, North Carolina in beautiful Western North Carolina.
The document is also signed by Thomas Wadley Raoul, who was president of the Biltmore Estate Company and was instrumental in the organization and founding of Biltmore Forest. The Raoul property is now a Historic Landmark and the ornate interior of the Inn was carved by skilled Italian
    workman
from the Biltmore Estate while Thomas Raoul ran the Inn for his father. His father, William Green Raoul was the president of Georgia Central and Mexican Central Railroads.
This piece would make an excellent Christmas gift for a lover of the Biltmore House in Asheville.
